ODU's Jones Quoted in New York Times

Jeffrey Jones, an associate professor in Old Dominion University's Department of Communication and Theatre Arts, was quoted in a March 29 New York Times article about Fox News commentator Glenn Beck.

The story describes Beck as "one of the most powerful media voices for the nation's conservative populist anger," and one who is known for tapping into viewer fears about the economy and politics. Jones and other media experts contributed comments about Beck's technique.

"Mr. Beck engages in 'inciting rhetoric. People hear their values are under attack and they get worried. It becomes an opportunity for them to stand up and do something,'" Jones says in the story.

Jones is the author of "Entertaining Politics: New Political Television and Civic Culture" (Rowman and Littlefield, 2005), a book examining humorous political talk shows on television such as "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart." The second edition of "Entertaining Politics" will appear in August 2009. Jones is also co-editor of "The Essential HBO Reader" (University Press of Kentucky, 2008) and "Satire TV: Politics and Comedy in the Post-Network Era" (NYU Press; in press, March 2009).
