ODU Alumnus Reiss Speaking at CCPO Seminar on Climate Observations in Antarctica

Christian Reiss, who holds a Ph.D. from Old Dominion University and now is a scientist for NOAA and the U.S. Antarctic Marine Living Resources Program (U.S. AMLR), will speak about climate change in the Southern Ocean in the Spring Seminar Series of the ODU Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) at 3:30 p.m. Monday, March 16.

The talk in CCPO's Room 3200 in the Innovation Research Park@ODU Building 1 will be preceded by a reception with refreshments beginning at 3 p.m. The seminars in the series are free and open to the public.

The topic of Reiss' talk is "The U.S. AMLR Program: NOAA's Long-term Antarctic Ecological Observation Program." He will explain how the program's integrated ecosystem research data about fisheries management can be used in climate change research, providing long-term observations of Antarctic conditions that scientists rarely have at their disposal. Scientists need these observations to better understand the impacts of global warming, ranging from the reduction of annual sea ice to the decline of prey species such as Antarctic krill.

Reiss is a research fishery biologist responsible for the assessment of krill biomass for the U.S. AMLR Program. He received his Ph.D. from ODU in 1997.
