APPOINTMENTS/ELECTIONS

KAREN SANZO CRUM, assistant professor of educational leadership, elected to serve as associate editor for the Learning and Teaching in Educational Leadership Special Interest Group newsletter.

CYNTHIA JONES, eminent scholar and professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences, elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. The honor was for "distinguished contributions in marine fisheries ecology, especially development of analytical tools to evaluate stock structure, population dynamics and life-history strategies."

AWARDS

PETER SCHULMAN, associate professor of French and international studies, awarded the Chevalier de l'Ordre des Palmes Academiques from the French government for his continued involvement in French culture and academic achievement.

JOHN ADAM, University Professor of mathematics, "Noticing Mathematical Patterns in Nature" as a featured speaker at the National Institute for Learning Development 2009 Northeast Regional Conference in Lancaster, Pa. Also, a workshop for teachers at the conference, titled "Guesstimation: 'Ballpark' Numbers, the Geometric Mean and the Goldilocks Principle."

KAREN SANZO CRUM and STEVE MYRAN, assistant professors, and JENNIFER CLAYTON, visiting assistant professor, educational leadership, two papers at the annual convention for the University Council for Educational Administration in Anaheim, Calif.: "Building Bridges Between Knowledge and Practice: A University-School District Leadership Preparation Program Partnership" and "The Development of a Rural University-District Partnership: Four Pillars Necessary for Continued Success."

JOHN HOLSINGER, eminent professor emeritus of biological sciences, and Glenn Longley, Texas State University, "Relict Anchialine Faunas of the Edwards Aquifer, Balcones Fault Zone and Associated Areas in South-central Texas and Northern Mexico" at an international symposium on "Anchialine Ecosystems: Reflection and Prospects" in Mallorca, Balearic Islands, Spain

PETER SCHULMAN, associate professor of French and international studies, "Sophie Calle's Jerusalem: Seeking Inner Peace in Turbulent Times" for the SCMLA in Baton Rouge, La.

ANDREAS TOLK, associate professor of engineering management and systems engineering, "New M&S Challenges Derived from the NATO Research & Technology Organization (RTO) Systems Analysis Studies (SAS-071) Task Group on Analytical Tools for Irregular Warfare" at the Winter Simulation Conference in Austin, Texas. Also at the conference, with R.B. Garrett (lead author) and T.J. Bacon, "Exploring Effective Methods for Modeling a Comprehensive Approach to Political, Military, Economic, Social, Information, and Infrastructure (PMESII) / Human, Cultural, Social, Behavior (HSCB) Community of Interest (COI)." Also at the conference, with Bacon (lead author), P. Jones and Garrett, "Integration of Psycho-Social Models and Methods in NATO's Approach to Operations: A Review of NATO Research and Technology Organization (RTO) Systems Analysis Studies (SAS - 074)." All of the papers were published in the proceedings.
