Historian Brian Payne Discusses Early Environmentalism on With Good Reason

Brian Payne, assistant professor of history at Old Dominion University, is a guest on this week's "With Good Reason" radio program, "The River in the Atlantic Ocean," and will discuss how gangs of fisherman in the 1800s argued and fought over fishing grounds even as they practiced a kind of early environmentalism. The program will be broadcast locally on WHRV (89.5 FM) at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 15.

Payne teaches American maritime and environmental history at ODU and is particularly interested in oceanic resource extraction and management policies in international waters. His past work focused on the North Atlantic fisheries and his next project will examine international conflicts in the North Pacific pelagic seal fishery.

"With Good Reason" is produced for the Virginia Higher Education Broadcasting Consortium by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and is broadcast in partnership with public radio stations in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
