College of Business and Public Administration Names Faculty Fellows

Old Dominion University's College Business and Public Administration (CBPA) has awarded fellowships to five faculty members in recognition of the work they have done on behalf of the college and the university.

According to Nancy Bagranoff, dean of the college, these faculty members have "demonstrated outstanding scholarly productivity, and effectiveness in teaching and in service to their community."

The fellowships are funded by endowments from ODU alumni. The Haislip-Rorrer Faculty Research Fellowships are gifts from 1971 graduates Wallace G. and Linda Rorrer Haislip. The E.V. Williams Faculty Research Fellowship and Faculty Teaching Fellowship are gifts from an endowment of the late E.V. Williams. Williams attended Old Dominion in the 1930s when it was known as the Norfolk Division.

The honorees are:

Haislip-Rorrer Faculty Research Fellowships

Shaomin Li, professor of management, joined ODU in 2002. He teaches international business, a subject that not only integrates a wide range of social and administrative theories, but also requires extensive practical experience. His rich business background enables him to shed light on how international trade and investment are conducted. He served as a director at AT&T in charge of developing the East Asian market, founding CEO of an Internet firm in Hong Kong with two subsidiaries in China, and adviser to a number of multinational firms. Li is a recent winner of an Outstanding Faculty Award from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.

Yuping Liu, assistant professor of marketing, joined ODU in 2002. She teaches Internet marketing to both undergraduate and M.B.A. students, and conducts research at the juncture of marketing, technology and psychology. Her research investigates how consumers interact on the Internet and how the Internet can be used more effectively for marketing purposes.

E.V. Williams Faculty Research and Teaching Fellowships

Faculty Research

Ling Li, professor of operations and supply chain management, joined ODU in 2001. Li's expertise includes theoretical and practical explanations of logistics and supply chain strategies, technology innovation for competitive advantage in a global market, production and operations management, and the impacts of emerging paradigms. Her published work focuses on a number of important issues such as supply chain management, operations planning and control, railway loading issues, knowledge management for problem solving, health-care issues and firm performance analysis.

Haiwen Zhou, professor of economics, joined ODU in 2005. His fields of specialization include international economics, industrial organization, economic growth and economic development. He teaches courses in managerial economics and international trade. Zhou has been referenced in numerous prestigious journals, including the Journal of Economic Integration, the Southern Economic Journal and Economic Theory.

Faculty Teaching

Edward Markowski, professor of information technology and decision sciences, joined ODU in 1985. He teaches courses at the undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels in data analysis and statistical methods. In addition, he teaches in the management science and operations management areas. His research focuses on evaluating the characteristics of statistical methods, on robust and /or nonparametric statistical methods, and on strategies for improvement of instruction methods in the business statistics curriculum. His consulting activities concentrate on applications of statistical principles, particularly in the context of legal issues and cases.
