ODU's Carmody Selected as Franklin Fellow for Summer 2009

Dianne Carmody, University Professor and associate professor of sociology and criminal justice, is one of four individuals selected for the first summer Fellows Program at Franklin College in Lugano, Switzerland.

The theme of the 2009 summer Fellows Program is "Exploring World Citizenship" and will provide educators and undergraduates with the opportunity to build innovative teaching and learning strategies around the sometimes-controversial concept of citizenship in its international context.

"The department is very excited about Dr. Carmody's excellent opportunity to participate in the Franklin Fellows summer program," said Randy Gainey, chair of the sociology and criminal justice department. "The selection process was highly competitive and her acceptance speaks highly of her past performance in teaching, conducting research and providing service to the university and the academic community at large."

Carmody will present the course International Perspectives on Violence Against Women, in which students will read and discuss cultural responses to violence against women, domestic violence across societies, sexual violence in a cultural context, the underpinnings of sex trafficking, victim response in cross-national comparison, and other aspects of law, society and social change associated with violence against women around the world.

"I'm excited about this opportunity to expand both my teaching and research into the international arena," Carmody said.
