ODU Students Are Eligible for Space Grant Financial Assistance

Students at Old Dominion University who are majoring in science, math and engineering are eligible to apply for financial assistance from the Virginia Space Grant Consortium (VSGC) Scholarship/Fellowship program for 2009-10.

Money is available to help students conduct research, buy supplies or pay for school. The NASA-sponsored VSGC offers four competitive programs to support Virginia students majoring in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and related areas.

Each year, the VSGC awards approximately $300,000 to students attending consortium institutions, which, other than ODU, include the College of William and Mary, Hampton University, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech and Virginia community colleges.

The four programs are:

• Graduate Research Fellowship--$5,000 to fund student research supporting NASA's mission; award is renewable for up to 3 years.

• Undergraduate Research Scholarship--$8,500 award for rising juniors/seniors to fund research supporting NASA's mission.

• Community College STEM Scholarship--$1,500 award to rising sophomore students majoring in a STEM area.

• Teacher Education STEM Scholarship--$1,000 award to aspiring teachers majoring in a STEM area at any higher education level.

All research awards require a faculty-mentored research project, and VSGC can assist students in identifying a project. A major goal of the VSGC is to help produce the engineers and scientists of the future. While opportunities for careers in STEM and aerospace have expanded, the number of talented students pursuing degrees in STEM has declined.

Visit the VSGC website at http://www.vsgc.odu.edu for more information about each program and to complete an application.
