Work of ODU Solid State Electronics Group Well Received at Conference in Hawaii

Old Dominion University graduate students Pragya Rasmi Shrestha and Kandabara Tapily won student travel grants and registration waivers that allowed them to present award-winning research at the Pacific Rim Meeting (PRIME) on Electrochemical and Solid-State Science in Honolulu in October.

They are students of Helmut Baumgart, ODU's Virginia Microelectronics Professor of electrical engineering. He served as conference organizer for the 10th International Symposium on Semiconducter Wafer Bonding: Science Technology and Applications, which was held by the Electrochemical Society (ECS) as part of PRIME.

Shrestha and Tapily presented three research projects at the symposium and Tapily was the winner of a $500 student research award from the symposium organizing committee to support his thesis work in atomic layer deposition high-k films deposited on strained silicon-on-insulator engineered wafers. Both Tapily and Shrestha received meeting registration waivers worth $290 each.

In addition, Tapily received travel grants totaling $1,400 from the ECS's Electronics and Photonics Division and Dielectrics Division, and from the symposium. Shrestha received a travel grant of $400 from the Dielectrics Division.

During PRIME, Baumgart and other researchers in the ODU Solid State Electronics Group presented a total of six papers at two separate ECS symposia, all of which were published in ECS proceedings volumes. The ODU professor edited "Semiconductor Wafer Bonding 10: Science, Technology and Applications," ECS Transactions, Volume 16, No. 8, ISBN 978-1-56677-654-7, The Electrochemical Society, (2008).
