Winners of Young Artists' Competition Announced

The Old Dominion University music department has announced the winners of the eighth annual Young Artists' Competition, held Saturday, Nov. 1. The four winners, chosen from among 16 ODU student contestants, will perform as soloists with the ODU Symphony Orchestra next spring.

"This was the best and largest group of applicants we have ever had, and the highest quality of performers," said Lucy Manning, director of the ODU String Orchestra and one of the contest judges.

Manning noted also that originally the judges planned to select only three soloists, but the decision was so difficult that they decided to offer four slots. Joining Manning on the judging panel were Alfred Townsend, F. Ludwig Diehn Endowed Chair in instrumental music education, and Nancy Klein, director of the ODU Concert Choir.

The winners, and the selections they will perform at the concert on April 24, are: Shanon N. Allen, marimba - Rosauro: Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra; Charlee Baugh, alto saxophone - Glazounov: Concerto for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra; Jessica Bryan, piano - Grieg Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16 (1st movement); and Orson van Gay II, tenor - Lehar "Dein ist mein gauzes Herz" from Das Land des Lächelns and Verdi "La donna e mobile" from Rigoletto.
