Historian Payne to Speak on Fisheries at CCPO Science Seminar

Brian Payne, assistant professor of history at Old Dominion University, will present a program on the development of fisheries science in the United States as part of the fall seminar series of the university's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography. His talk will be at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, in Room 3200 of the Innovation Research Park@ODU Building.

The seminar is free and open to the public. A reception with refreshments will begin at 3 p.m.

Payne's research is focused on marine resource extraction and management policies in international waters. He will discuss current fisheries management issues pertaining to science, policies and national and international laws, and explain why what happened in the past is an important aspect of formulating today's fishery management.

The presentation, titled "The Goode Report: A History of Fisheries Science and Some Thoughts on Environmental Studies," will explore political and economic motives that influenced the so-called "Goode Report" on American fisheries that was prepared in the late 19th century following the creation of the U.S. Department of Fish and Fisheries. Payne also will discuss the potential for interdisciplinary research in environmental studies at ODU.
