ODU's Filer to Discuss Financial Crisis at IEPA Talk Today

Old Dominion University's Institute for Ethics and Public Affairs (IEPA) will host a talk by Larry Filer, associate professor of economics, titled "Making Sense of the Nonsense: An Explanation of the 2008 Financial Crisis." The talk is scheduled for today at 12:30 p.m., in room 9024 of the Batten Arts and Letters Building. It is free and open to the public.

Filer will discuss how bank insolvency and tight credit issues have precipitated an economic recession, and the role subprime mortgages have played in creating the current situation. He will also address the question: Have the federal government and Federal Reserve responded adequately to help reduce the effects of the crisis?

In addition, Filer will talk about some of the markets involved in the latest crisis, such as the mortgage market, mortgage securities and consumer credit, and discuss both deregulations that helped create the current situation and possible regulations we may see as a result of the crisis.

For more information about the talk, call Yvette Pearson, IEPA's co-director, at 683-6509.
