ODU Students to Perform at Young Artists' Competition Nov. 1
Old Dominion University will present its eighth annual Young Artists' Competition at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1. This year, 16 ODU student applicants were selected to compete for three solo slots with the university Symphony Orchestra or Wind Ensemble at a spring recital. The competition will be held in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine Performing Arts Center. It is free and open to the public.
The competition is expected to last about two hours. During this time, instrumentalists will perform one concerto or solo work, and vocalists will perform a maximum of two arias or solo melodies with accompaniment.
At the end of the competition, three judges will deliberate and post their decision in the afternoon. Judges for the event are: Lucy Manning, director of the ODU String Orchestra; Alfred Townsend, F. Ludwig Diehn Endowed Chair in instrumental music education; and Nancy Klein, director of the ODU Concert Choir.
"They're all really outstanding students," said Manning. "It's going to be difficult to judge."
