ODU Hosting Symposium on Rising Economic Powers: China and India

Old Dominion University and Wiley-Blackwell, publisher of "Corporate Governance: An International Review," will host the first Research Symposium on Corporate Governance in China and India Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25, at the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel.

Registration for the symposium will begin at 4 p.m. today, followed by a reception at 6 p.m.

The symposium will feature keynote speeches by prominent governance experts from China and India, research paper presentations and roundtable discussions with practitioners and academics.

Anil K. Gupta, who is widely regarded as one of the world's leading experts on business strategy and globalization, will give the keynote address this evening. Gupta has had articles published in the Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post and USA Today. He has written more than 60 papers and four books, including "The Quest for Global Dominance" (2001) and "Smart Globalization" (2003). His newest book, "The Battle for China and India," is scheduled for release later this year.

Minxin Pei, a senior associate in the China Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, will give the keynote address Saturday evening. His research focuses on democratization in developing countries, economic reform and governance in China, and U.S.-China relations. His research has been published in prestigious journals, including Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs, and in numerous publications such as the Financial Times, The New York Times, The Washington Post, Newsweek International and the International Herald Tribune.

The symposium was conceived to encourage research on corporate governance issues relating to China and India, countries that are rapidly ascending as economic powers and playing important roles in international trade and investment. Increasingly, international investors are entering these markets, and Chinese and Indian firms are raising capital globally. As these countries' interactions with the global economy increase, knowledge of corporate governance in China and India is becoming more critical for business executives, policymakers and academic researchers, according to the organizers of the symposium.
