ODU Business College to Host Faculty Forum on Economic Crisis Oct. 22
Five of Old Dominion University's top economics experts from the business faculty will participate in a panel discussion on the current economic crisis this week. The forum, "Explaining the Economic Crisis: An Evening with ODU's B-School Faculty," is scheduled for 7-8:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, in the North Cafeteria of Webb University Center. It is free and open to the public.

The forum will cover a variety of topics, including:
1) How did we get into this mess?
2) What's been the role of the Federal Reserve in getting us into and out of this mess?
3) Mark to market accounting - what is it and is it good or bad?
4) Why did we need a bailout/rescue?
5) Why did Wachovia fail?
6) How much are Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to blame?
7) What does a tight credit market mean to you?
8) Was short selling a culprit?
Nancy Bagranoff, dean of the ODU College of Business and Public Administration, will moderate the panel discussion. Members of the audience will have an opportunity to submit questions to panel members.

Larry Filer, Associate Professor of Economics
Larry Filer has taught in the economics department since 1999. He received his master's degree and doctorate in economics from the University of Kentucky. His research focuses on personal bankruptcy, monetary policy and credit access. His work has been published in several top economics journals and has also been featured in various media outlets, including The Virginian-Pilot, USA Today and CNBC. He is a frequent speaker to local groups in Hampton Roads.
Sylvia Hudgins, Professor of Finance
Sylvia Hudgins is a professor of finance and director of the Ph.D. program in the College of Business and Public Administration. She teaches classes in banking, financial institutions and corporate finance. The eighth edition of her textbook, "Bank Management and Financial Services," which she co-authored with Peter S. Rose, will be published shortly. Much of her research focuses on the empirical analysis of commercial banks and thrifts. She is treasurer and a member of the board of directors of the Old Dominion University Credit Union.
Mike Stein, Associate Professor of Accounting
Mike Stein received his Ph.D. from the University of British Columbia. He has taught accounting for more than 25 years at the University of Oregon, Rutgers University, University of British Columbia and ODU. His main research interest is the economics and regulation of auditing markets. He has served on the editorial boards of several leading accounting journals.
Gilbert Yochum, Professor of Economics
Professor Yochum received his Ph.D. from West Virginia University and is a Professor of Economics, University Professor and Director of the Old Dominion University Economic Forecasting Project. He was chairman of the Old Dominion University economics department from 1990 to 2000. He currently serves as a member of the Governor's Advisory Board of Economists for the state of Virginia. Dr. Yochum has been an economic consultant to over 50 companies and government agencies and has provided professional testimony before both federal and state government commissions. He is author or co-author of more than 80 professional journal publications and research monographs. In addition to citations in professional journals, Yochum's work has been cited publicly in more than 130 newspaper, magazine and wire reports throughout the U.S. including the Wall Street Journal, Forbes, the Dow Jones newswire, Associated Press and USA Today.
