Message to the ODU Community from Acting President Broderick on the 9/11 Anniversary

Today our nation will solemnly observe the seventh anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

As we recall the events of that terrible morning, I ask that you take a moment to remember the victims and their loved ones. Those who were lost will always hold a special place in the hearts and minds of Americans.

I also ask that you remember the heroes of that day and in the weeks and months that followed. Their sacrifices, selflessness and courage should continue to inspire us all and serve as a model for our daily interactions with each other, our communities, and the world.

Our lives were irrevocably changed that day.

Woodrow Wilson once said, "We are citizens of the world. The tragedy of our times is that we do not know this."

Let's not let that be the legacy for our times. Our profoundly multicultural community at Old Dominion University offers each of us the opportunity to learn, to understand, to grow. The knowledge we gain here enables us to pursue peace and justice not only as citizens in our countries, but also around the world.

May we use our education to become our best selves and to understand that, indeed, we all are citizens of the world.

Sincerely yours,

John R. Broderick

Acting President
