CCPO Speaker to Describe Method for Showing South Atlantic Circulation Fields

Kevin Speer, professor of oceanography at Florida State University, will speak on "Estimates of Mean Ocean Circulation in the South Atlantic from Tracer Fields," in the fall seminar series of Old Dominion University's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15.

The talk in CCPO's Room 3200 in the Innovation Research Park@ODU Building 1 will be preceded by a reception with refreshments beginning at 3 p.m. The seminars in the series are free and open to the public.

Speer combines hydrographic and tracer distributions with inverse methods to determine the flow structure of the ocean. Inverse methods are techniques that allow dynamically consistent circulation fields to be obtained that conserve particular properties of seawater, such as temperature and salinity. The speaker will discuss an inverse method he developed and show circulation fields for the South Atlantic that were produced using this method.
