CCPO Seminar Speaker Will Address Climate Change Impact on Arabian Sea
Joaquim Goes, senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences in West Boothbay Harbor, Maine, will present his research about the impact of climate change on the Arabian Sea in the fall seminar series of ODU's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 29.
The talk in CCPO's Room 3200 in the Innovation Research Park@ODU Building 1 will be preceded by a reception with refreshments beginning at 3 p.m. The seminars in the series are free and open to the public.
Goes, the winner of the 2001 Takeda Foundation Techno Entrepreneurship Award for Environmental Sciences, is an expert on marine phytoplankton-environment interactions, and how these are related to climate. His latest research ties a warming trend over Eurasia to an atypical strengthening of the southwest monsoon winds and upwelling off the coasts of Somalia, Oman and Yemen. These conditions, according to his students, are responsible for recent summer-time escalations of phytoplankton biomass in the Arabian Sea.
