ODU Faculty, Coach Discuss Marijuana, War and Sports Topics on "HearSay" This Week
Members of the Old Dominion University community will be guests on WHRV-FM's (89.5) midday talk show, "HearSay with Cathy Lewis," for three separate programs this week.
On Tuesday, Aug. 5, Meghan Zwisohn, an adjunct professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice and a senior assistant commonwealth's attorney for Norfolk, will discuss the program's topic, "Up in Smoke - Marijuana and Tobacco Legislation."
Scientists, activists and lawmakers have long debated how to leverage the medical benefits of marijuana while minimizing the potential for abuse. Now Congress is considering a bill that would remove federal penalties for possession and use of small amounts of marijuana. Zwisohn, who just completed a year and a half term as the senior assistant on the Norfolk commonwealth'sattorney office drug team, will discuss the law in Virginia.
On Wednesday, Aug. 6, Beth Anders, head coach of ODU's field hockey team, will appear as a guest for the "Beijing Bound" program. ODU will have 10 alumni competing in the 2008 Olympic games - nine for U.S. teams and one representing Mali - playing in three different sports: field hockey, sailing and basketball.
At Old Dominion, Anders has mentored the women's field hockey team for more than 25 years and has led her teams to perennial appearances in the NCAA tournament. Under her tutelage, the Lady Monarchs have achieved more honors than any other field hockey program in NCAA history and have brought the nationalchampionship trophy back to Norfolk an unprecedented nine times. Four former Lady Monarchs, Tiffany Snow ('03-Escondido, Calif.), Caroline Nichols ('06-Virginia Beach), Dana Sensenig ('06-Denver, Pa.) and Angie Loy ('05-Loysville, Pa.), will represent the country as former members of coach Anders' ODU squads.
On Thursday, Aug. 7, Joyce Hoffmann, associate professor of journalismat ODU and currently the public editor of The Virginian-Pilot, will be a guest on the program "War Stories: Female Journalists in Vietnam," and will discuss her latest work - the story of women journalists who risked their lives to cover America's involvement in the Vietnam War.
Hoffmann's book, "On Their Own: Women Journalists and the American Experience in Vietnam," includes rich detail not only about the women writers and photographers who worked as reporters in Vietnam, but also about the 1960s-era political and cultural climates in the United States, in Vietnam and in American newsrooms. Joining Hoffmann on the program will be Laura Palmer, one of the journalists interviewed for her book.
