ODU's Hatcher is Keynote Speaker at Penn State Conference

Patrick Hatcher, the Batten Endowed Chair in Physical Sciences at Old Dominion University, was the keynote speaker for the 11th annual Environmental Chemistry Student Symposium at Pennsylvania State University March 28-29.

The symposium is sponsored by Penn State graduate students with assistance from the university's Center for Environmental Chemistry and Geochemistry (CECG). Hatcher was on the Penn State faculty from 1989-1998 and was the first director of CECG.

He has been a professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry at ODU since 2006 and is director of ODU's College of Sciences Major Instrument Cluster (COSMIC) laboratory.

Hatcher's speeches were titled "Reactivity of Environmentally Generated Quinones with Natural Organic Matter and Human Cells" and "The Combined Application of Solid/Liquid-State 2D NMR Techniques with Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Mass Spectrometry for Unraveling the Chemical Composition of Natural Organic Matter."

Student presenters from Penn State, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Pittsburgh and Franklin and Marshall College participated in the two-day event.
