Darby Speaks on Arctic Paleoceanography at Conference in England

Dennis Darby, the Old Dominion University marine geologist and Arctic specialist, was the keynote speaker at the Second International Meeting of the Arctic Paleoclimate and Its Extremes (APEX) in early April in Durham, England.

The title of his talk was "Arctic Paleoceanography, Past, Present and Future."

Darby, who has been on numerous scientific expeditions inside the Arctic Circle, including two of major significance in the summers of 2005 and 2007, is an expert at reading ocean sediment samples and other geophysical data in order to gather clues about climate patterns and cycles.

There were nearly 100 Arctic researchers at the APEX meeting, most of whom were from Europe. APEX has become the leading Arctic programs research group in Europe.

Darby is professor of ocean, earth and atmospheric sciences at ODU.
