Lady Monarchs Lose to UConn in NCAA Sweet Sixteen

Old Dominion's run in the NCAA tournament came to an end Sunday afternoon when the Lady Monarchs fell to top-seeded Connecticut, 78-63.

The Huskies, who proved to be a force on both offense and defense, were led by freshman Maya Moore, who had 25 points and 11 rebounds in the day's first semifinal game. Rutgers topped George Washington 53-42 in the other semifinal contest, and will next battle UConn for a trip to the Final Four.

ODU made it to the Sweet Sixteen after winning its first two games at the Ted Constant Convocation Center, the second an overtime thriller against Virginia.

Connecticut, which never trailed ODU, shot 47.5 percent for the game. Up by 10 points at the half, the Huskies put the contest out of reach early in the second period with a 20-1 run.

Junior forward Tiffany Green paced the fifth-seeded Lady Monarchs with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore Jessica Canady also recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Overall, ODU shot 38.8 percent, had 15 turnovers and five assists.

At the conclusion of the game, after congratulating the Huskies, the ODU coaches and players gathered at center court to thank all of the fans who came to the game.

ODU finished the season with a 31-5 record.
