K-12 Students to Test Computer Skills at ODU's 23rd Annual Great Computer Challenge
Teams of students from area schools will soon test their mettle in computer programming and problem solving during the Great Computer Challenge at Old Dominion University. Competitors will be split into two divisions: The senior division for grades 6-12 will meet from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 15; the junior division for K-5 will meet Saturday, April 19.
The Great Computer Challenge is a joint project of WHRO, the C.I.I. and ODU. It's a competitive opportunity for students in grades K-12 to demonstrate their skills in various computer applications and computer programming, including Graphic Arts, Desktop Publishing, Music Composition, Desktop Presentations, Web Design, Internet Scavenger Hunt, Integrated Applications, Scientific/Non Business Programming, Visual Basic, CAD and JAVA.
More than 120 teams are registered to compete this Saturday in the following categories: Graphic Arts, Desktop Publishing, Music Composition, Desktop Presentations, Web Design Integrated Applications, Scientific/Non-Business Programming, Visual Basic, CAD and JAVA. There will also be educational workshops for teachers and parents.
The primary organizers for the 23rd annual event are Doug Streit of Old Dominion's Office of Computing and Communications Services (OCCS) and Annie Gilstrap of WHRO.
ODU faculty and staff, as well as local business leaders, will judge the competition. First, second and third place, as well as honorable mention, will be recognized in each category.
"The Great Computer Challenge provides students in Hampton Roads a great opportunity to test their technology skills and compete against other schools in areas of programming, desktop publishing, Web design, music composition and other categories," said Rusty Waterfield, acting assistant vice president of OCCS. "Faculty, staff, and students from Old Dominion University serve as judges and create challenging problems that make the contest exciting and extremely competitive."
