Emergency Preparedness Drill Is Now Complete

Old Dominion University's Department of Public Safety conducted an emergency preparedness drill on Tuesday, March 18, in conjunction with the commonwealth of Virginia's Tornado Preparedness Day, sponsored by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management.

The tornado preparedness drill began at 9:45 a.m. and affected staff and occupants in the following campus buildings: Human Resources, Building I; Kornblau Alumni Center; and Child Development Center.

Building-emergency coordinators at each location initiated emergency tornado preparedness procedures upon notification from public safety officials. Other emergency communications systems, such as campus wide e-mails, e2Campus text messages and Web site postings, were utilized during the drill.

Members of the campus community who have not yet signed up for the text message alert system can do so at www.odu.edu.

As a reminder, during a real tornado emergency, seek shelter in a building's basement or any other windowless interior room (closet, bathroom, interior hall) on the lowest level of a building. All members of the campus community are encouraged to review tornado preparedness plans at www.vaemergency.com.

For questions or more information, call ODU's Department of Public Safety at 683-4003.
