VISTING ARTIST JENNIFER TRASK TO LECTURE AT ODU TONIGHT

Metalsmith Jennifer Trask will give a public lecture at 7 p.m. tonight in the Burgess Room (9024) of the Batten Arts and Letters Building at Old Dominion University. A reception will precede the lecture at 6:30 p.m.

Trask makes one-of-a-kind jewelry objects and sculpture that exploit the inherent beauty of natural materials. Her work results from a passion for discovery, study and contemplation of the material world. The objects are not only a collection of textures and colors, but also a personal taxonomy of visual or conceptual relationships.

Her work can be seen in several galleries nationally, including SOFA New York and Chicago, as well as the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Arts and Design in New York. Recent articles and reviews have appeared in Metalsmith Magazine, American Craft and The Sunday Boston Globe Arts section. Trask is represented in the current traveling exhibition, "The Art of Gold."

"Jennifer Trask is an artist and metalsmith who is much more than simply a jewelry maker," commented Peter Eudenbach, assistant professor of sculpture in ODU's department of art. "She is an alchemist working with objects and materials from nature to create very lyrical and poetic pieces. Their precision and small scale invite us into a world that is both expansive and intimate."

Earlier on the day of her visit, Trask will conduct a demonstration of her craft for students of Dianne deBeixedon, ODU associate professor of art.
