"THE KENNETH FITZGERALD ALBUM (EXTENDED PLAY)" OPENS MARCH 1 AT UNIVERSITY GALLERY

The Baron and Ellin Gordon Galleries at Old Dominion University will host a new exhibition, "The Kenneth FitzGerald Album (Extended Play)," at the University Gallery from March 1 to April 6. An opening reception will be held from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, March 1.

The solo exhibition features mixed-media, two-dimensional works by Kenneth FitzGerald, ODU associate professor of art, including new works alongside remixed and rearranged selections from the artist's past catalog.

The title of the show is illustrative of its theme of mixing and crossing media: album as photo and/or music compilation. In their materials and subject matter, the works in the exhibition engage ideas of remixing, repurposing and recontextualizing. Most are print-based, either original text and image compositions from large-format digital printers, or constructions composed of samplings and mash-ups of "accidental" graphics and "make ready" from professionally offset pieces. Other selections include small sculptures made from books and found materials, wet clay "paintings," digital works of reformatted Web animations, and folded paper objects ("hexahexaflexagons") to be manipulated by gallery visitors.

FitzGerald's 2-D work is included in public and private collections in New York, New England and the Midwest. Selections of his artist book works are in the Museum of Modern Art/Franklin Furnace/Artist Book Collection. His four-issue, self-produced magazine project, The News of the World (copies of which are included in the show), received awards for design excellence from the American Center for Design and AIGA.

FitzGerald currently teaches in the undergraduate Graphic Design and graduate Visual Studies programs at Old Dominion. Samples of his work can be found at his Web site, http://www.ephemeralstates.com.

The Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries, located at 4509 Monarch Way, Norfolk, are open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday. For more information call 683-6271 or go to http://www.odu.edu/al/art/gallery.
