REMLEY NAMED FELLOW OF THE AMERICAN COUNSELING ASSOCIATION

Ted Remley of the Darden College of Education at Old Dominion University has been named an American Counseling Association (ACA) Fellow for his extensive service and scholarship contributions to the counseling profession. Fellows are ACA members of professional distinction who have been recognized for significant and unique contributions in professional practice, scientific achievement and governance, or teaching and training, and have made important contributions to the counseling profession.

This is one of the highest awards the American Counseling Association grants. Remley, of Norfolk, will be recognized at the ACA Conference in March in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Remley joined the ODU faculty in 2006 and holds the Batten Endowed Chair in Counseling. Recently appointed graduate program director for counseling in the Department of Educational Leadership and Counseling, he served as executive director of the ACA from 1990-94, and member at large for publication for the American Association of Counselor Educators. He served on the ACA's Governing Council for three years and its Executive Committee for one year.

"Recognition by the American Counseling Association as a Fellow is one of the highest honors of the association," noted William Graves, dean of the Darden College of Education. "Dr. Remley has earned this recognition throughout his career in counselor education as a leader in ethics and legal aspects of counseling.

"While this recognition for his scholarship is important, I believe Dr. Remley's most important contribution is through his work with doctoral students, helping them to assume leadership positions in universities around the nation. Perhaps the greatest compliment a faculty member can receive is the one Dr. Remley got from his former students - they were among the strongest advocates that he receive the Fellow designation from the association," Graves added.

"There is no question that Dr. Remley deserves this award. In many ways, it is overdue," commented Edward Neukrug, an ODU colleague. "Over the years he has distinguished himself as a leader in the field. Go to a conference and mention his name, and you have everyone's willing attention.

"His leadership in the American Counseling Association and his writing on ethical and legal issues are known to all in the field of counseling. And his guidance is bearing fruit here at ODU: his quiet but firm leadership has helped to very quickly bring national recognition to the new Ph.D. program in counseling at ODU," Neukrug noted.

On learning of the award, Remley said, "I am indeed honored to be recognized as a leader and scholar in my profession of counseling. I am fortunate to have been named to the Batten Endowed Chair in Counseling at ODU and to be in the company of senior scholars in the counseling profession, including Nina Brown, Ed Neukrug and Garrett McAuliffe."

Having led successful counseling doctoral programs at both the University of New Orleans and Mississippi State University, Remley intends to make ODU a top name in the field for graduating doctoral students "within the next three to five years." He intends to streamline candidate processes in the university's relatively new doctoral program to increase the numbers of students, and then seed universities across the nation with ODU graduates to attract more top-notch doctoral candidates.

Remley holds a doctorate in counselor education from the University of Florida and a law degree from Catholic University in Washington, D.C. He is licensed as a professional counselor in Virginia, Louisiana and Mississippi, and is a member of the bar in Virginia and Florida.

A nationally certified counselor, Remley has chaired the counselor licensure boards in Virginia and Mississippi. He is a former executive director of the American Counseling Association. Remley has also taught at George Mason University, Mississippi State University, and the University of New Orleans.
