GREGORY ARTICLE ON ORGANIC LASERS AND OPTICAL FIBERS LAUDED

An article about organic lasers and optical fibers co-authored by Richard Gregory, chair of the Old Dominion University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has been selected as one of the best articles to appear during 2007 in Journal of Optics A: Pure and Applied Optics.

Members of the journal's editorial board chose the article, titled "Elliptical Micro-Ring Organic Lasers," to appear in a special collection of their personal favorites in the category of "rapid communication."

Other authors of the article are P. R. Korade and John Ballato, faculty members at Clemson University's School of Materials Science and Engineering. Korade was mentored as a graduate student by Gregory.

The collection of the past year's "highlight" articles is at www.iop.org/EJ/journal/-page=extra.downloads2007/1464-4258. All papers in the collection are free to read online.

The three researchers reported in the article that elliptical organic micro-ring lasers offer increased tailorability in emission properties over more conventional analogues of circular cross-section. The article, which appeared in the June 21, 2007, issue of the journal, also discusses the potential for these low-threshold lasers to serve as integrated sources for fiber lasers and amplifiers.
