CCPO HOSTING SPEAKER ON GULF COAST HYPOXIA

A Texas A&M University scientist will present a program on hypoxia-oxygen deficiency-in the coastal waters of the Texas-Louisiana continental shelf at 3:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 11, at Old Dominion University's Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO).

The guest speaker, Steve DiMarco, studies the causes and effects of hypoxia, some of which is brought on by nutrient-rich freshwater flowing into the Gulf of Mexico from the Mississippi River. The condition can drive away fishes and cause distress in less-mobile, bottom-dwelling creatures.

His presentation, part of the CCPO Spring Seminar Series, will be at CCPO, which is on the second floor of the Innovation Research Park @ ODU building at 4111 Monarch Way. A reception with refreshments begins at 3 p.m. The public is invited to this free program.
