ODU CREATIVE WRITING DEPT. ANNOUNCES DEADLINE FOR POETRY CONTEST

Old Dominion University graduate students in the M.F.A. Creative Writing Program and undergraduate students who have a declared emphasis in creative writing are eligible to register for the Poetry Society of Virginia-Old Dominion University Poetry Prize. The deadline for submissions is Monday, Jan. 21.

The Poetry Society of Virginia (PSV), through the efforts of 2006-08 Virginia Poet Laureate Carolyn Kreiter-Foronda, established a permanent endowed poetry prize of $2,500 for ODU in 2007. The endowment allows the university to conduct an annual poetry competition and to award a cash prize to one or two deserving graduate or undergraduate student poets. The contest's sponsor, the Academy of American Poets (www.poets.org), issues prize checks, letters of congratulation and announces the winners in its annual report. The winning poets also will receive a one-year membership to the Academy of American Poets.

Eligible students may submit up to three unpublished poems in English (no translations accepted), with total page count not to exceed six pages. No more than one poem should appear on a page. No personal information should appear anywhere on the poetry submission. Poems should be printed single-spaced, on one side of the paper only. Clear photocopies are acceptable. The poems should be submitted with (a) the official Contest Registration Form and (b) one title page listing the poem/s entered in the competition, along with the author's name, mailing address, telephone number/s, and e-mail address. Entries will not be returned. An official Contest Registration Form is available from the English department office, BAL 5000. There is no entry fee.

Entries may be mailed or delivered to: Luisa A. Igloria, PSV-ODU-AAP Poetry Prize Coordinator, English Department, 5000 Batten Arts and Letters Building, Old Dominion University, Hampton Boulevard, Norfolk, VA 23529.

Queries may be addressed to Igloria (ligloria@odu.edu; 683-3929) or Leslie A. Clements in the M.F.A. Creative Writing Program Office, BAL 5010 (lclement@odu.edu; 683-4770).
