ODU ART PROFESSOR'S SCULPTURE SELECTED FOR EXHIBITION AT TRIA GALLERY IN NEW YORK
John R.G. Roth, an assistant professor of art at Old Dominion University, has his sculpture on display in New York City's Tria Gallery exhibition, "Premonitions, which opened Jan. 10 and continues through Feb. 9. Also on display are oil-on-steel paintings by Jovan Villalba and short films by Kun-I Chang and Youngwoong Jang.
Tria, located in the heart of Chelsea, specializes in contemporary painting and mixed media by established and emerging artists. In addition to artwork on exhibit, the gallery maintains an inventory of selected works by its featured artists.
In a press release describing "Premonitions," the gallery states: "We are at war. Nation against nation. Man against earth. Images of war and storm-torn landscapes surround us, so the dark and apocalyptic imagery in 'Premonitions' resonates, capturing feelings of isolation, helplessness, fear, frustration, anger, and sometimes hope. � John R.G. Roth finds elements of the absurd in American foreign policy and the Iraq war in his sculpture. � The works in 'Premonitions' provide thought-provoking forays into the minds and imaginations of these artists, who, despite their different media, become somehow united in their mental landscapes."

Raised in the Chicago area, Roth worked for nine years in a research lab fabricating models, prototypes, one-of-a-kind machines and destructive testing. He also worked for 10 years as an instructor and technician in sculpture at Ohio University School of Art. Roth's active exhibition record includes recent shows in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis and London. He joined the ODU faculty in 2005.
Roth received a Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship in 1994, a Dane County Wisconsin (Madison) Individual Artist Fellowship in 1993, the Robert Riddick Memorial Award as part of the Rawls Museum National Juried Show in 2007, and the Anne DeVaughn Award for most innovative work in the Wills Creek Survey Allegany Arts Council National competition in 2007.
