"ADLAI STEVENSON'S LASTING LEGACY" PANEL DISCUSSION IS TONIGHT
Old Dominion University will host a panel discussion of "Adlai Stevenson's Lasting Legacy," a new book edited by Alvin Liebling, senior administrative law judge for Illinois, tonight at 7 p.m. in Chandler Recital Hall of the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
Adlai Stevenson (1900-1965), a former governor of Illinois, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and twice Democratic candidate for president, played a key role in American politics throughout much of the middle of the 20th century. The book, a collection of essays from Sen. Eugene McCarthy, Sen. Adlai Stevenson III, Ambassador George Bunn, Brian Urquhart, John Brademas, Arthur Schlesinger and others, looks at Stevenson's past and current societal significance.
Contributors to the volume together with ODU faculty will discuss Stevenson's impact and how his legacy offers insights into current issues in American politics and foreign policy. The panelists include Judge Liebling, New York University President Emeritus John Brademas, ODU Kaufman Lecturer in Public Affairs G. William Whitehurst and journalist Don Campbell.
ODU's James Sweeney, associate professor of history, will introduce a series of film clips at the beginning of the lecture, and Glen Sussman, professor of political science, will summarize the discussion and moderate a question-and-answer session at the end.
