ODU SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA CONCERT NOV. 2, CONCERTO COMPETITION NOV. 3

The Old Dominion University Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Lucy Manning, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2 in the University Theatre. The program, called "Made in America," will feature compositions by 20th and 21st century American composers Joan Tower, John Corigliano, George Gershwin, and Howard Hanson. The concert is free and open to the public.

Manning, assistant professor of violin and orchestra, brings extensive experience as a violinist, violist, and chamber musician to the podium. She is a former member of the Dallas Opera and Ballet Orchestras, Albany Symphony Orchestra, St. Cecilia Orchestra, Lake George Opera Festival Orchestra, and appeared as soloist with numerous other orchestras. She is the founder and former music director of the Saratoga Chamber Players in New York, was assistant conductor of the University of South Carolina Symphony, Chamber, and Opera Orchestras, and conducted performances with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra and with soloists of the National Opera Company of China as part of an International Conductors Institute.

From 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Nov. 3, 9 ODU student instrumentalists and vocalists will compete for 3 slots to perform with the Symphony Orchestra or the Wind Ensemble in the Spring of 2008. Three faculty members will judge the competition, which is free and open to the public. The concerto competition will be held in the Chandler Recital Hall in the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center.
