ODU'S DIEHN CONCERT SERIES FEATURES SOPRANO ROBERTA ALEXANDER NOV. 12

Soprano Roberta Alexander will perform an evening of music, including opera arias, lieder, Broadway songs, anecdotes and information with the central theme of "Femmes Fatale," at Old Dominion University at 8 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12. Alexander also will give a master class at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13. Both events will be held in the Chandler Recital Hall, located in the Diehn Fine and Performing Arts Center at ODU.

Among the most compelling singing actresses of our time, Alexander enjoys international renown for her riveting, incisive characterizations and miraculous vocal and dramatic range. She is an uncommonly communicative recitalist and has offered acclaimed programs at New York's Carnegie Recital Hall, the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, the Vienna Musikverein, London's Wigmore Hall and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw.

An especially ardent and persuasive interpreter of American masterworks, her latest recordings include "Songs My Mother Taught Me" and "With You" (the latter an anthology of Broadway songs). Her voluminous discography on the Etcetera, Philips, Sony, Teldec and BMG reflects her astonishing mastery of varied vocal styles: songs by Barber, Mozart, Bernstein, Ives, Copland, Strauss, Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Puccini and Villa-Lobos; Handel's "Giulio Cesare," "Apollo e Daphne," and "Samson and Theodora"; Mozart's "Don Giovanni" and "Idomeneo"; and such rarities as Goldschmidt's "Der Gewaltige Hahnrei" and "Beatrice Cenci," Heppener's "Four Songs of Ezra Pound" and an Edison-winning recording of Andriessen's "Songs with Orchestra."

The F. Ludwig Diehn Concert Series is supported by a grant from the Diehn Fund of the Norfolk Foundation. Tickets for the performance are $15 for general admission and $10 for ODU students with a valid ID. The master class is free and open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets may be purchased at the Arts and Letters Box Office in the lobby of University Theatre, located between 46th Street and 47th Street, or by calling 683-5305.
