PRESIDENT RUNTE ADDRESSES MRSA CONCERNS

I recently spoke with officials from our Student Health Center who confirmed that cases of infection caused by MRSA have occasionally occurred over the past few years. They also indicated that there is a confirmed case on campus currently being treated satisfactorily.

There is no reason to panic but there is reason to be vigilant. Health officials cite practicing good hygiene as the best preventive measure against infectious diseases, including MRSA. Please review and practice the health tips listed below. Together we can help to keep our community healthy.

- Wash your hands often, especially before meals and after using the restroom, and use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer between soap and water washings.
- Wipe down surfaces with disinfectant cleansers or a bleach solution, especially "high touch" surfaces, such as door handles, tabletops and desks or study areas.
- Cover your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing and wash your hands afterward.
- Dispose of used tissues in the trash.
- Keep your bathrooms clean and clear of debris.
- Wipe perspiration from exercise equipment following workouts.
- Avoid sharing personal items (e.g., towels, razors) that come into contact with your bare skin.
- Increase your resistance levels with proper rest, diet and exercise.
- Cover skin abrasions or cuts with a clean, dry bandage until healed. Visit your health-care professional for any sore that appears to be infected.
