ODU'S 2007-08 THEATRE SEASON PROMISES DIVERSITY
Theatrical diversity, with performances that appeal to all audiences, will be the hallmark of the 2007-08 season at the Old Dominion University Theatre and Stables Theatre. The season, which opens this week, includes an outrageous musical, a Greek comedy classic, a Japanese mystery and a festival of 10-minute short plays.
The season will kick off in the University Theatre Friday, Oct. 19 with Richard O'Brien's musical, "The Rocky Horror Show," directed by Katherine Hammond. This live stage musical is fast, fun and sexy, and is sure to tantalize with its naughty humor. The timeless camp classic follows squeaky�clean sweethearts Brad and Janet, who happen upon the feisty Frank-n-Furter and rippling Rocky. In addition to the regular 8 p.m. shows, there will be two midnight shows for this production, featuring costume contests and prizes.
The second show of the season, directed by the theater program's newest faculty member, Jenifer Alonso, will be Aristophanes' "The Birds," translated by Peter Meineck. As of Friday, Nov. 16, the intimate Stables Theatre becomes home to a boisterous chorus of birds that help two vulgar old men escape their debt, avoid lawsuits, find mates, oust the gods and found Cloud Cuckooland - a raucous utopia that soon collapses into a zany dictatorship.
Beginning Friday, Feb. 15, the University Theatre will be transformed into 12th-century Japan, with Fay and Michael Kanin's Japanese mystery, "Rashomon," directed by Konrad Winters. Brimming with Samurai action, "Rashomon" incisively examines the nature of truth. This is, perhaps, one of the finest stories ever to challenge perceptions of reality and justice. Through ingenious use of flashbacks, the play reveals the complexities of human nature as four people recount different versions of the story of a man's murder and the rape of his wife.
The season closes in April with intensity, variety and spontaneity in "10 for 10." The directors have 10 days to rehearse, the designers have 10 days to build and the actors have 10 minutes to play. The best part is that the audience gets to watch 10 plays for $10 dollars. "10 for 10" opens Thursday, April 10.
Tickets for ODU Theatre productions are $10 for students and $15 for general admission. The "10 for 10" is $10 for all tickets. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Arts and Letters box office, located in the lobby of the University Theatre (Hampton Boulevard, between 46th and 47th streets), or by calling 683-5305. They are also available at the door an hour before each performance. The Stables Theatre is located on Monarch Way between 46th and 47th streets. Free parking is available in the 45th Street garage.
