BARON AND ELLIN GORDON ART GALLERIES OPEN "PERIGEE: SCULPTURE BY STEPHEN CARTWRIGHT," OCT. 27

Old Dominion University's Baron and Ellin Gordon Art Galleries opens "Perigee," work by Stephen Cartwright, with a reception at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27.

Cartwright's work explores the physical representation of time and space. By recording such information as latitude, longitude and elevation as he moves through space, or the amount of daylight he experiences over the course of five years, he obtains data that can be extrapolated into three-dimensional maps. These maps, as physical representations, abstractions, tangencies or stills culled from the data, allow us to gain some understanding of the complexities of the truth of our existence as we move through space and time.

An assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University, Cartwright holds a master of fine arts degree from Tyler School of Art and a bachelor's of art from the University of California, Davis. He has been included in shows in galleries, art centers and museums throughout the United States, including exhibitions at Temple University Art Gallery, Philadelphia; White Columns Gallery, New York; The San Francisco International Art Exposition; D.U.M.B.O. Art Center, Brooklyn; and the Tweed Museum of Art, Duluth.
