TRAINING SESSION ON DEALING WITH DISRUPTIVE STUDENTS IS TODAY

A training session for faculty and staff on dealing with disruptive students will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 24 in the Chesapeake Room in Webb University Center.

Sponsored by the Division of Student Affairs, the workshop will be presented by Brett Sokolow of the National Center for Higher Education Risk Management. It is free and open to all Old Dominion University faculty and staff, but reservations are requested by calling 683-3442.

Topics will include distracting or disrespective dress; cellphones, texting and instant messaging during class; use of dark imagery or threatening language; eating disorders; depression; and threats of suicide.

Discussion will focus on best practices for managing a wide range of disruptive behavior, when and how to confront it, and utilizing police and counseling center resources. Additionally, participants will learn the thresholds for and ways to remove students from classes or housing.
