MORE THAN 700 HELPING THE LOCAL AREA IN ODU'S COMMUNITY CARE DAY TODAY

The importance of giving back to the community will be the emphasis during Old Dominion University's fifth annual Community Care Day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12.

"More than 750 student, faculty and staff members volunteered in the community during our event last year," said Cecelia Tucker, director of community relations at ODU, who is hoping for an even larger turnout this year.

The project will focus on outreach, with students, faculty and staff volunteering their time and service at several locations in the Norfolk community. "The day gives people an opportunity to show that they care," Tucker said.

Volunteers will be involved in a variety of projects, including picking up trash in the Larchmont, Edgewater, Lambert's Point and Highland Park neighborhoods near the campus, as well as helping clean up along the Elizabeth and Lafayette rivers.

Additionally, ODU volunteers will read to children at James Monroe Elementary; clean a resident's home for Hope House; and play games with children at the Hunton YMCA.

As a prelude Community Care Day, the university will sponsor a food drive for the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia on Oct. 1.

To volunteer or for more information, visit the Community Care Day Web site at http://www.odu.edu/ccd or call Tucker at 683-3159.
