CCPO RESEARCHER TO DISCUSS BAY OBSERVING WORK AT OCT. 1 SEMINAR

New observing systems for the Chesapeake Bay, including the just-launched Chesapeake Inundation Prediction System (CIPS), will be the topic of Old Dominion University researcher Elizabeth Smith at a seminar of the Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography (CCPO) on Monday, Oct. 1.

Her presentation in Innovation Research Park @ ODU, Room 3200, will begin at 3:30 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

Smith is a research assistant professor in ODU's Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and is affiliated with the CCPO. She also is executive director of the Chesapeake Bay Observing System (CBOS) and project coordinator for CIPS.

The title of the presentation is "Chesapeake Bay Observing System Pilot Projects: Weather, Waves and Water Quality." The recently formed CBOS will build and enhance a network of fundamental, real-time and verifiable observations about the bay area. One advantage will be early warnings of storm-related flooding.

Smith received a master's degree in oceanography from Florida State University and worked in oceanographic data management systems for NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory before coming to ODU in 1993.
