PANEL DISCUSSION ON HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE OF "NORFOLK 3" TONIGHT

A panel discussion featuring architects and historians discussing the historical significance of the "Norfolk 3," three historical buildings in downtown Norfolk slated for demolition, will be held Tuesday, Aug. 7.

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 7-8 p.m. in room 151 of the Perry Library. It is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Languages.

The buildings, all early- to late-19th century historical structures, are scheduled to be demolished to make way for a new Hilton Hotel. The buildings include the "Furniture Building" on the corner of Granby and Main Streets, the Beechcroft Building on Main Street and the Decker Building directly behind the Beechcroft.

Moderated by former WHRO radio host Lane Dare, the panel will include:

* Prominent local architect Greg Rutledge, who will discuss the history and importance of the three buildings to Norfolk's downtown,
* Hiroatsu Fukuda, a visiting architectural professor from Japan who will discuss ways in which the three buildings can co-exist with the proposed Hilton without demolition; and
* Prof. Frederick Lubich, professor of German and chair of foreign languages at ODU, who will discuss the three buildings from a post WWII German point of view,
the importance of architecture and collective memory.
