NANCY COOLEY NAMED TO SECRETARY OF TECHNOLOGY'S BROADBAND ROUNDTABLE

Nancy J. Cooley, vice provost for distance learning at Old Dominion University, was appointed by Virginia Secretary of Technology Aneesh Chopra to the Commonwealth's Broadband Roundtable. The group, which is charged with developing a last-mile telecommunications "blueprint," for advancing Governor Kaine's goal of ensuring broadband access for every Virginia business, is comprised of highly experienced telecommunications executives and practitioners from academia, industry, and the public sector.

Over the next year, members of the Roundtable will concentrate their efforts on five areas critical to the delivery of low-cost, last-mile service: Broadband Adoption, Technology, Innovative Applications, Business Models, and Community Outreach. The Roundtable will coordinate its efforts with those of the Wireless Broadband Telecommunications Subcommittee of the Joint Commission on Technology and Science, co-chaired by Senator William Wampler (R-Bristol), and Delegate Joe May (R-Leesburg). The group will conduct meetings throughout the year culminating in a report to the Governor by July, 2008.

Cooley joined Old Dominion in 2006, after serving as the academic affairs and planning director at the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. She also served as acting executive director of SCHEV. Before her arrival at SCHEV, she was dean of the College of Education and Human Services at Ferris State University in Michigan, and prior to that held leadership positions in the offices of Information Technology, Academic Affairs and the Department of Teacher Education and Professional Development at Central Michigan University.

Cooley holds a bachelor's degree in education from Central Michigan, a master's degree in teaching from Oakland University and a doctorate in curriculum, teaching and psychological studies from the University of Michigan. She completed a full-year postdoctoral fellowship as the Helen L. DeRoy Fellow in Educational Leadership at Michigan State University and earned certificates from the CAUSE National Management Institute in Boulder, Colo., and the Management Development Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.
