FIRST-EVER "WEBINAR" TO EXPLORE EMERGING EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH
Old Dominion University's new Center for Teacher Quality and Educational Leadership (CTQEL) joins the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) for a first-ever "webinar," to discuss issues such as national certification for principals and to share emerging educational research, on Wednesday, Aug. 22.
This multistate web-based seminar, titled a "Collaborative Partnership on Principals Leadership Development," will also determine how the partnership will move ahead, and how to share current and planned leadership development activities. Other university partners include the Universities of Arkansas, Kentucky, Florida and Illinois.
Participants from ODU include Dave Blackburn, director of the Program for Research and Evaluation in Public Schools; Phil Hamilton, director of CTQEL; and PREPS researchers Steve Myran and Joan Jackson.
Hamilton, a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, has led Virginia's education leadership system "redesign" efforts for many years as a member of the General Assembly Education Committee and as chair of the Joint Legislative Commission to Review, Study and Reform Education Leadership. The Virginia General Assembly sponsors the CTQEL, which is located at ODU's Peninsula Higher Education Center.
In October, he will join the Virginia delegation, which includes state superintendent of instruction Billy Cannaday, at the national Wallace Foundation Education Leadership Conference in Boston.
The Center for Teacher Quality and Educational Leadership recently completed its first professional development intervention with ODU partner Newport News Public Schools. Superintendent Ashby Kilgore requested that the center present the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards to the district's 230 formal leaders. ISLLC standards are the basis for the licensure of beginning administrators.
The mission of the CTQEL includes:
Conducting research on the preparation and development of school principals that supports achieving the "Challenge to Lead" goal.
Developing training modules that support aspiring and emerging principals as they learn and apply practices that improve schools and increase student achievement, and preparing trainers to deliver SREB education leadership modules.
Assisting school districts to develop policies and plans for providing high-quality leadership training and assistance to district and school leadership teams in low-performing schools that result in improved school and classroom practices and increased student achievement.
