LETTER FROM PRESIDENT RUNTE

July 17, 2007

Dear Colleagues,

Five years ago when Dr. Isenhour was promoted to provost, we all agreed to a five-year term, followed by a search.

Over those years, Dr. Isenhour has served the University well. Among his accomplishments are the creation of the strategic plan, and the addition of a large number of new academic programs, including seven Ph.Ds. He has set in motion the establishment of the University College and the review of the general education curriculum.

Dr. Isenhour has agreed to allow his name to be considered by the search committee. We expect our national search to produce many candidates of merit. I assure everyone that the search will be open and fair. I encourage everyone to submit names of qualified candidates. Our national advertisement seeks qualified applicants from Old Dominion or a similarly ranked or superior university.

I was guided by advice from a large number of faculty and staff in selecting the search committee. As you will note, each college is represented, as are our deans, department chairs, faculty, staff and students. The members of the committee reflect the diversity of our campus, and I thank them for agreeing to serve.

Vice President and Chief-of-Staff John Broderick has agreed to chair the search. The other committee members include: John Adam, professor of mathematics; Kojo Asamoa-Caesar, Student Government Association President; David Branch, associate dean, Darden College of Education; Chandra deSilva, dean of the College of Arts and Letters; Veronica Finch, director of student financial aid; Scott Harrison, director of information technology for student services; Brenda Marshall, assistant dean, College of Health Sciences; Linda McGreevy, professor of art; Virginia O'Herron, University librarian; Linda Vahala, associate dean of the Batten College of Engineering and Technology; Charles Wilson, interim vice provost for undergraduate studies and dean of the University College and Douglas Ziegenfuss, professor of accounting.

The advertisement appeared in the Chroniclein June and applications are currently being received. I would hope that this search can be concluded during the course of the fall semester.

Sincerely yours,

Roseann Runte
President
