ANGELA HUCLES NAMED TO WOMEN'S WORLD CUP SOCCER TEAM

Angela Hucles, daughter of Old Dominion University faculty members Janis Sanchez-Hucles, professor of psychology and department chair, and Michael Hucles, associate professor of history, was named to the U.S. Women's World Cup soccer team this week.

The team will compete in the event, which is hosted by China, beginning Sept. 11.

Hucles has an Olympic gold medal from the 2004 Summer Games, but has never competed in the World Cup.

The ODU community will remember Hucles' visit to the campus with other members of the U.S. women's team in 2005 to practice for a game with Canada in Virginia Beach.

Michael Hucles said he and his wife are "pleased and grateful that our daughter has the opportunity to fulfill her dreams."

He added, "We have always taught our children that with success comes tremendous responsibility. I know of no greater responsibility that an athlete has than representing her or his country on the world stage. We were fortunate to see our daughter do this in the 2004 Olympics held in Greece and we are confident that she will be equally representative in China in 2007."

Sanchez-Hucles said Angela "is a hard worker for her team, and I believe that her skills and composure will be real assets."
