ODU STUDENT RESCUES SWIMMER IN BAY

Local lifeguard Diana Cozzens, an Old Dominion University sophomore majoring in nursing and midshipman in the Navy ROTC unit, revived a boy who was pulled from the waters of a Chesapeake Bay beach Tuesday after he stopped breathing. Her heroics were reported in a Virginian-Pilot story on June 13.

Late in the afternoon Tuesday on Ocean View Beach, Cozzens was watching a boy with a scuba mask who had been swimming for a while. She noticed he was face down, as if watching the bottom, and was not coming up for air.

Cozzens pulled him from the water and with the help of another woman performed CPR.

Lifeguards gave him oxygen, and a bit later, he regained consciousness and was taken by ambulance to Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters to be checked out.

The boy had not aspirated water, said Cozzens, who thought he may have blacked out while holding his breath. "The guards reacted well, and I'm glad," Dan Jones, the city's head of aquatic activities, said in the newspaper article.
