FORMER ODU PITCHER THROWS NO-HITTER

Former Old Dominion University pitcher Justin Verlander threw a no-hitter in the Detroit Tigers' home game against the Milwaukee Brewers Tuesday night. He had 12 strikeouts in the 4-0 win.

The 24-year-old right-hander was still throwing 100-mph fastballs in the 9th inning, when he mowed down three batters in five minutes to secure the no-hitter. It was the first home-park no-hitter for a Tigers pitcher since 1952.

Verlander, last year's American League Rookie of the Year, has a 2007 win-loss record of 7-2 and a 2.79 earned run average, which is sixth best in the league.

Wrote ESPN.com columnist Jerry Crasnick: "This is precisely what the Tigers hoped for when they signed Verlander to a $3.12 million bonus out of Old Dominion University in 2004."
