HARVEY STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF INTEGRITY AT COMMISSIONING CEREMONY

Vice Adm. John C. Harvey Jr., chief of naval personnel and deputy chief of naval operations, stressed the importance of honor and integrity during his remarks at the 2007 Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps and Army Reserve Officer Training Corps of Hampton Roads spring commissioning ceremony on May 5.

Harvey, who served as guest speaker and commissioning officer, praised the Hampton Roads ROTC program for creating a unique learning environment for students to develop during their college years.

"You live your lives with honor," Harvey said. "You hold yourself to a higher standard than your peers. This is your heritage."

The ceremony marked the first joint ROTC graduation combining the Navy and Army units.

Forty-one midshipmen and officer candidates from Old Dominion, Norfolk State and Hampton universities were commissioned as ensigns in the U.S. Navy and three as second lieutenants in the U.S. Marine Corps. Another seven ODU graduates recognized during the program were commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army.

Vice Adm. Harvey assumed duties as the Navy's 54th chief of naval personnel in 2005. He serves concurrently as the deputy chief of naval operations.
