SCIENTIST WHO WORKED IN IRAQ SPEAKS TODAY

Peter Smallwood, a University of Richmond biology professor who spent nearly a year in Iraq trying to redirect the work of scientists who had been employed in Saddam Hussein's weapons laboratories, will speak on the Old Dominion University campus Tuesday, Feb. 20.

His lecture, "Science and Policy in Iraq and Afghanistan: What's an Ecologist Doing in a War Zone?", will be at 3 p.m. in 101 Mills Godwin Jr. Life Sciences Building. His talk is sponsored by the Department of Biological Sciences Seminar Series and is free and open to the public.

Smallwood is former director of the U.S. State Department's Iraqi International Center for Science and Industry. His work in 2004 and 2005 helped to put Iraqi scientists and engineers to work in rebuilding Iraq's infrastructure.

After working in Iraq, the professor spent a summer in Afghanistan administering a World Wildlife Fund grant that sought to create sanctuaries for snow leopards, mountain sheep and other endangered wildlife.
