PORTER'S RED-LIGHT-RUNNING RESEARCH UNVEILED TUESDAY IN RICHMOND

Bryan Porter, associate professor of psychology at Old Dominion University, will explain results of his red-light-running research at a news conference to be held at the General Assembly Building in Richmond at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 16, under the sponsorship of the Virginia Photo Red Coalition.

In recent years, Porter has promoted the law-enforcement and traffic-safety gains that can come from having photo-enforcement cameras installed at major intersections. But although Virginia has tested photo enforcement, legislators have not given it the green light to continue.

Participants in the news conference are hoping that the 2007 General Assembly getting underway in Richmond will react more favorably toward photo enforcement legislation.

Porter's research in Hampton Roads between 2004 and 2006 showed that photo-enforcement cameras could cut red light running by up to 69 percent.

The Virginia Photo Red Coalition includes traffic researchers, the insurance industry, the National Campign to Stop Red Light Running, the American Automobile Association in the Mid-Atlantic, law enforcement officials and some lawmakers.
