GOV. KAINE TO SPEAK AT MLK COMMUNITY LEADERS' BREAKFAST JAN. 15

Gov. Timothy Kaine will serve as keynote speaker for the Urban League's annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Leaders' Breakfast Monday, Jan. 15, at Old Dominion University's Ted Constant Convocation Center.

With the theme of Remember! Celebrate! Act!, the breakfast is co-sponsored by ODU, and begins promptly at 7:30 a.m. Doors will open at 6:30 a.m.

The breakfast honors the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and recognizes local leaders who are fulfilling his dream through their contributions in the areas of community service, workforce development, education and health.

During the event, the 2006 Martin Luther King Jr. Award will be presented to:

Beverly Kay Sell, for her strong commitment to advocate for racial equality and justice and her ability to galvanize support for important community causes;

Southeastern Virginia Arts Association (SEVAA), for promoting the artistic talent of youth through music, theatre, art, literature and dance; and

Tidewater Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc., for their dedication to preserving the heritage of the Tuskegee Airmen experience by providing incentives for young people to achieve academically and to aspire to careers in aviation, aero-space and related fields.

The Urban League's Dream Maker Award will be presented to Carolyn Williams Bell, a former director of community relations at Old Dominion and Norfolk State universities who initiated the concept of the MLK Community Leaders Breakfast as a way to coalesce higher education with community organizations.

Since it was established in 1984, the MLK Community Leaders' Breakfast has grown in size; more than 600 people attended the 2006 event. Tickets are $30 per person and a table of eight is available at the sponsorship level.

To become a sponsor, purchase tickets or obtain additional information, call the Urban League office at 627-0864.
